STUDENT SPOTLIGHT | WINTER 2017

Major: Photo Media major with a minor in Art History and a certificate in Entrepreneurship

Describe your work in a few sentences that we can all understand: For my creative project, I am recreating photographs that my mom took of Oswego, Kansas almost 20 years ago. The purpose of this is to examine how much small towns are changing.

Q: Who mentors your project?

A:    Elise Kirk

Q: What surprised you about doing a larger creative project?

A:  Since I am recreating photographs, I was surprised to find out how hard it would be to get the shot lined up similarly. It takes a lot of trying out different spots and getting the angle just right.

Q: What did you find most challenging about getting involved in or doing your project? What advice would you offer to students facing similar challenges?

A: Since my project requires traveling to a town two and a half hours away, it requires a lot of balancing my schedule between school, work, and this project. I would advise other students to plan ahead and create a set schedule for their project so they don't procrastinate. Once I made trips to Oswego, it was well worth all the planning and extra time.

Q: What do you like most about your project?

A:  I like that my project has a personal element to it, but is still something others can relate to. Since part of my family lived in Oswego and my mom took those pictures it has been fun reminiscing and exploring. I think this town can remind others of where their roots began and make them wonder what changes have occurred.

Q: What advice would you give to a friend wanting to get involved in research or creative work?

A: You should explore something that holds a deep interest to you so that you will become more invested in your project, which will create a deeper meaning in the work as a whole.

Q: How do you spend your time when you're not working on your project?

A: When I'm not working on my project, I am actively involved with the Spencer Student Advisory Board and Jayhawk Photo Group. Other than that, I am doing random photo shoots around KC and Lawrence or hanging out with friends.
